Sustainability

Mission

The main mission of the Cell for Sustainable Development is to foster learning, research and action to address complex environmental and social challenges we face. Learning in a community places active participation, practical experience, inquiry-based learning and real-world problem solving at its centre. Accordingly, three overarching strategic goals are to foster:

  • Applicability to practice of research and teaching that centres on environmental and social issues
  • Connections between disciplines to explore the complexities of societal challenges
  • Greater integration of research, teaching, campus operation, planning and civic engagement

The  UL Strategic Action Plan on Sustainable Development  (2010-2013) was produced in a participatory process setting out activities relating to these goals.

Sustainable Campus Charter

In July 2010 Rolf Tarrach, rector of the University of Luxembourg has signed the ‘ Sustainable Campus Charter ’, which highlights the clear commitment of the university to organise its future development also in view of affecting beneficial environmental and social impacts. The charter was developed by the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN) and the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF). Lead author of the ISCN-GULF charter is Dr. Ariane König in her function as chair of one of the ISCN Working Groups.
