Milan and Florence were the two main destinations of University President Rainer Klump during his visit to Italy from the 8 to 13 October 2015. The business trip, planned and put in place with the help of the Italian Embassy in Luxembourg, has been a great opportunity to strengthen existing relations and build new interesting ones.
Milan, city of EXPO and economic and financial heart of Italy, was a major focus in the President’s agenda. The visit of the European University Institute in Fiesole near Florence was another highlight.
Signature of a scientific agreement with Villa Vigoni
Visits and meetings were organised with with Prof. Immacolata Amodeo and Dr Michele Vangi at Villa Vigoni, a research centre overlooking the Lake of Como that fosters relationships between Italy and Germany in the fields of scientific research, higher education and culture in a European and international perspective. The centre is increasingly promoting multinational research programmes.
In that perspective, the visit was an occasion to sign a scientific cooperation agreement with the University of Luxemburg in the area of multilingualism and intercultural exchange that should involve partners from Luxembourg, Italy, Germany and France.
On potential cooperation with Unicredit
A meeting took place at the headquarters of Unicredit, the largest Italian Bank and one of the largest in Europe, between President Klump and Yeltekin Sertac (Head of Corporate Learning) and Giannantonio De Roni (General Secretary of Unicredit & Universities).
Potential cooperation areas have been discussed, above all leveraging the competences the University of Luxembourg can express in Economics & Finance and its location in one of the European financial hubs.
Agreements with Università Commerciale L. Bocconi
A business lunch at the Università Commerciale L. Bocconi (Bocconi University) with Prof. Stefano Caselli (Vice-Rector for International Relations), Laura Candotti (Director of the Markets and External Affairs Division) and Mario Tabarini (Study Abroad Manager) was the opportunity to investigate the start of a fruitful cooperation in many sectors, from student and faculty exchange to scientific cooperation.
It was agreed that a student exchange between the two universities could start at undergraduate level by next year and that interested faculty members should be encouraged to prepare a common workshop in the areas of finance, economics and law to explore areas of joint research interest.
Building bridges for the University’s future new Interdisciplinary Centre
University President visited the European University Institute (EUI) located in Fiesole (Florence). Accompanied by Prof. Andreas Fickers, Prof. Klump had the chance to visit the Historical Archives of the European Union and the EUI Library. Both met the Director of the EUI, Prof. Weiler, and Prof. Brigid Laffan, Director and Professor at the Schuman Centre for Advance Studies and Prof. Federico Romero, Professor of History of Post-War European Cooperation and Integration.
This visit to the EUI is very important in the framework of the creation of the new Interdisciplinary Centre devoted to the Study of Contemporary and European History at the University of Luxembourg. It was also meant to signal interest by the University of Luxembourg to cooperate with the holders of the Chair Pierre Werner at the EUI, a chair with a special focus on economic and monetary integration that is financed by the Government of the Grand Duchy.
