1964 in Deutschland geboren, absolvierte Jörg Gerkrath sein Studium der Rechtswissenschaften in Frankreich an den Universitäten von Montpellier I (1986-1989 ), Paris II (1989 - 1990) und Straßburg III (1990 - 1996). Die Universität Straßburg verlieh ihm im Jahr 1996 den Titel des „docteur en droit“. Seit September 2000 ist er Professor für öffentliches Recht der juristischen Fakultäten in Frankreich.
Er begann seine akademische Laufbahn als Forschungs- und Lehrassistent an der Robert Schuman Universität Straßburg (12/1991 bis 08/1996) und verfolgte sie weiter am Kulturwissenschaftlichen Institut im Wissenschaftszentrum Nordrhein-Westfalen in Essen als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter in der Arbeitsgruppe „Staatswerdung Europa’s“ (09/1996 bis 08/1997). Danach lehrte er als Dozent für öffentliches Recht an der Robert Schuman Universität Straßburg (09/1997 bis 08/2000) bevor er zum Professor für Öffentliches Recht an der Universität von Avignon berufen wurde ( 09/2000 bis 09/2006). Von der Universität Avignon frei gestellt, folgte er am 1. Dezember 2006 einem Ruf an die Universität Luxemburg als Professor für Europarecht.
Jörg Gerkrath lehrte Europarecht u.a. an den Universitäten von Montpellier 1, Aix -Marseille III , Straßburg III und der Universität Chulalangkorn in Bangkok. Seine Forschungsschwerpunkte liegen in den Bereichen Europarecht, Verfassungsrecht, Rechtsvergleichung und Grundrechte. Er ist Autor des Buchs „L’Emergence d’un droit constitutionnel pour l’Europe" (Editions de l’ULB , Brüssel 1997) und zahlreicher Artikel und Beiträge zu verschiedenen Aspekten des Europa- und Verfassungsrechts .
Des Weiteren veröffentlichte er das Buch „La jurisprudence de la Cour Constitutionnelle du Luxembourg – 1997-2007“ ( Pasicrisie Luxemburg, 2008) und koordinierte die Tagungsbände "Droit d’asile au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg et en Europe" ( Larcier , Brüssel 2009 ) und „La refonte de la Constitution luxembourgeoise en débat“ (Larcier, Brussels 2010). Er ist Mitglied des Redaktionsbeirats der European Constitutional Law Review Cambridge University Press.
