Mission

MARS considers sustainability to be the fair development of individual and social community well-being, with the central idea that sustainable societies improve the dignity of life of their citizens, both within and between generations, by preserving the equilibria of ecosystems and taking care of public goods with the provision of fair access to resources and rights, mediated by a culture of respect, caring and solidarity.

MARS aims to:

Set up a multidisciplinary – and potentially - interdisciplinary research centre where the various types of expertise currently present in the Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences can engage in dialogues about sustainability both within and outside the University by developing common research projects and ad hoc academic tools;

Raise the knowledge and awareness of the area of sustainability in the academic and international community in Luxembourg by contributing to the Sustainable Development Global Agenda 2030 and building networks among academic, institutional and civil society stakeholders.

The detailed research areas cover:

• Population dynamics and intergenerational conflict for resources redistribution;
• The economic dynamics that explain and regulate the management of resources and the redistribution of wealth and income among social groups and individuals;
• The conflicts and psychological trauma that human beings face in their development process as individuals;
• The planning and shaping of urban spaces, where the physical space can be designed to encourage and develop sustainable communities;
• The governance of global environmental and economic resource management and exchange – including migration - and the policy mitigation of the conflicts they caused, at the global and local levels;
• The production of new research combining all of the different aspects of human knowledge and oriented to stimulate critical perspectives and practical solutions to societal problems.
