FAQs

Here you will find answers to some of the most frequently occurring questions and issues associated with the Course Evaluation Questionnaire.

Q: Why online Course Evaluations instead of paper-&-pencil?

A: At FLSHASE, we aim to be at the cutting edge of assessment technologies and to be responsive to the needs of our students and teaching staff. Therefore, the online course evaluation helps us accomplish this in an efficient and user-friendly manner. Moreover, now that the new web-app has been developed and implemented, the online course evaluation system is less demanding in regards to logistical, administrative, and ressource requirements relative to the paper-&-pencil version.

Q: Is it confidential?

A: Yes! All your personal information is protected and it is treated anonymously. None of your instructors, programme directors, and not even the Dean will be have access to any of your personally identifiable information. Note, however, that in the case of a clear violation of community standards (e.g., threats of any kind) your personal information will be investigated and prosecuted according to University and Luxembourgish rules and regulations.

Q: But I had to login with my student ID, so how can my course evaluation be confidential?

A: The course evaluation information you provide is stored and secured without any personally identifiable information about you. Your login information is used solely to ensure:

  • that enrolled students* have access;
  • students evaluate only the courses they are enrolled in;
  • students submit only one evaluation per course;
  • and finally, to grant you access to the results platform for the courses you evaluated.

*Note: you will not be asked to evaluate courses, which you are repeating, or enrolled for the exam only.

Q: How can this be confidential if I am given personalized results?

A: We use a process called pseudonymisation. When you log in to the evaluation platform the first time, a hash code is created for you. The connection between the hash code and your person is cut, and can only be re-established under extreme circumstances (e.g. threats of any kind). When you log in to the platform to evaluate courses or access results, the platform only recognizes and uses this unique pseudonymised user.

Q: What is done with the data I provide?

A: The data you provide is protected and stored securely on university servers. To be clear, only your responses to the specific course evaluation questions that you provide are stored in a database. These data will be used to report aggregate, group-level, results to the instructors, programme directors, the Dean and the University President for the purposes of maintaining the high quality of education at the FLSHASE.

Note: results are made available to the teaching staff, programme directors, and the Dean only after the jury d'examen.

Q: Why are you collecting socio-demographic questions?

A: The socio-demographic questions (e.g., gender, age, etc.) are collected and stored only for statistical reporting purposes. For example, to answer the following kinds of policy relevant questions: are there any important differences in course evaluation responses by gender, or age of student? Note: the answer to these questions, and all other group-level results from the course evaluations, are not made available to the teaching staff, programme directors, or the Dean’s office until after the jury d’examen.

Q: Is the new online Course Evaluation platform reliable?

A: Yes! The new online course evaluation platform was designed and developed by a multidisciplinary university team of researchers and technical staff to function reliably on the most popular Internet browsers and a multitude of devices, e.g., smartphones, PCs and tablets. Moreover, with the help of students, the new course evaluation tool was thoroughly tested and evaluated in the HCI Usability Lab. Unfortunately, no software can be 100% bug-free, therefore you can help us make it better by reporting any technical problems you may encounter by emailing us at: ce.flshase@uni.lu.

Q: Do I have to be on campus to evaluate a course?

A: No. The course evaluations are now online; therefore, you may access the questionnaire using your smartphone, computer or tablet from anywhere that you have Internet connectivity.

Q: I have found the software to behave awkwardly - I suspect it is a bug; what should I do?

A: Please submit a description of the problem, and if possible, a screenshot of the computer error or weird software behavior to: ce.flshase@uni.lu . Thank you for your help.

Q: What is the course evaluation good for?

A: The online course evaluation is designed to help your instructor and programme directors maintain high quality learning experiences at the FLSHASE. Moreover, it aims to help empower students to voice their opinions, wants, and needs in regards to the quality of education they are receiving. Shaping the future of our faculty is a shared responsibility.

Q: I made a mistake in an evaluation and I would like to delete it or correct and resubmit it. Can I do that?

A: No, unfortunately not. Therefore, at the end of each course evaluation we provide you with an Overview Screen that summarizes your responses for you to review and verify before you click submit.

Q: What should I do if I don’t want to answer a particular question?

A: The system does not require you to answer all questions. You may simply skip any question that you don’t want to answer; however, we encourage you to provide us with as much details or suggestions as you feel necessary. The open-ended questions are designed to accept nearly limitless amount of text.
