Lorenzo Vianelli joined the Department of Geography and Spatial Planning of the University of Luxembourg in January 2020 as a postdoctoral researcher. He is the principal investigator of the CONDISOBS project, which is funded by a H2020 Marie Skłodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship. CONDISOBS provides a multi-sited qualitative study of the three key measures that were undertaken after the so-called “refugee crisis” to govern asylum seekers’ mobility in the EU, which is to say hotspots, relocation schemes and border controls.

Lorenzo obtained his PhD at the University of Warwick (UK) in 2018. His thesis – “Governing Asylum Seekers. Logistics, Differentiation, and Failure in the European Union's Reception Regime” – employs Foucauldian analytical tools to explore the multiple and contested ways through which asylum seekers are governed through reception in diverse contexts in the EU. After the PhD, he was involved in the H2020 project CEASEVAL, in which he carried out a study of the Luxembourgish reception system. He was also a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Exeter (UK), where he was involved in the ERC-funded project ASYFAIR on the fairness and consistency of asylum adjudication processes in several EU countries.

Lorenzo has an extensive experience in the field of asylum reception and procedure, which he acquired through scientific research, work experiences and membership in associations. His research cuts across political and human geography, politics and anthropology, and focuses on reception policies and practices, border struggles and “secondary movements” in the EU.
