I graduated pedagogy at the University of Novi Sad, Serbia, and leadership and developmental youth work at the University of Jönkoping, Sweden. As a young youth worker I worked in war-affected areas in ex-Yugoslavia by creating the series of workshops for children. My interest in early childhood education and critical preschool years started to develop.

I obtained my Master degree in psychology at the University of Luxembourg regarding the topic of cultural differences in empathy, self-esteem and self-disclosure of adolescents from different countries. Cultural psychology took an important place in my research endeavours. Topics such as child rearing practices, empathy, conflicts, humour, identity, and future time perspectives of intercultural intimate relationships started blossoming and produced nine excellent Bachelor theses (project INTOCUL).

The importance of home language of immigrant children for their school success was the topic of my PhD thesis at the University of Luxembourg (project PIPS). This PhD thesis won the award for scientific excellence and novelty in all disciplines. With this work I developed a particular interest in early reading, mathematics, socio-emotional skills and multilingualism of preschool immigrant children. This is crucial for children’s school success and many important academic and job decisions later in their life. For the first time, I analysed studies in Europe where I found that the bilingual programs were effective for academic achievement of immigrant children. This meta-analysis was published in a prestigious Journal in Education, Review of Educational Research.

Following the award, I received an FNR grant to work as a visiting researcher at the City University of New York focusing on multilingual pedagogies and practices of young immigrant children. I used this opportunity to interview, learn and be supported by the experts in the area of literacy and bilingualism: Ofelia García (CUNY New York), Catherine Snow (Harvard), Jim Cummins (University of Toronto), Nancy Hornberger (Penn GSE), and Ellen Bialystok (University of Toronto).

Overall, I am passionate about early childhood education, emergent reading, mathematics, socio-emotional skills, and multilingualism of preschool children. I have a specific interest in cultural psychology. To explore the richness of these topics I develop interdisciplinary projects in which I include preschool immigrant children, their parents and teachers. Such project is Home Literacy Environment and Family Language Policy of Language Minority Children in Luxembourg (HOMELY).  I create longitudinal studies, where I analyse the data with advanced statistical modelling I teach to my Master students (project PIPS). Whenever possible, I interview and invite for collaboration all the important actors responsible for the child development at home and at school. I then create projects that are directly corresponding to the expressed needs such as teachers’ need for professional development in multilingual pedagogies (project TRANSLA). Interdisciplinarity, availability, curiosity, empathy, and intellectual flexibility are important for my work. Doing research is exciting for me as I believe in discovery and sharing.
