Ion-Hideo Breden joined the Research Group „Self-regulation and Health” at the Institute for Health and Behaviour (Research Unit INSIDE) as a PhD student in October 2017. His current doctoral project, titled “Interoception and chronic stress” (INSTRESS), funded by the Research Support Department of the University of Luxembourg, is being undertaken under the supervision of Dr. André Schulz and Prof. Dr. Claus Vögele. The project comprises a multi-method approach to assess interoception and aims at elucidating the contribution of both physiological stress systems – namely (1) the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and (2) the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenocortical (HPA) axis – for altered processing of physical symptoms in chronically stressed schoolteachers.

His research interests include:

  • Stress, interoception, and body-related mental disorders (e.g., medically unexplained symptoms)
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Neurobiology/-pyschology of addiction
  • Psychophysiological research methods

Ion-Hideo received his bachelor’s degree in psychology – with minors in biology and neuroinformatics – from the University of Zurich (Switzerland) and continued his master’s studies in neuropsychology and cognitive neuroscience – with a minor in neuroinformatics – at the same institution. In his master’s thesis titled “Structural brain correlates of cocaine abuse using a Bayesian model of shape and appearance” (Referee: Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Lutz Jäncke), which was carried out at the Institute of Neuropsychology, Ion-Hideo investigated regular and chronic cocaine use and its effects on the central nervous system.
