Nicolò Maccaferri started his research activity in 2010 at the Department of Physics of the University of Ferrara as Undergraduate Research Assistant working on exchange bias in magnetic materials.

From 2012 to 2016 he was Pre-doctoral Researcher at the Nanoscience Research Center CIC nanoGUNE (Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain), where he studied the physical properties of plasmonic magnetic nanostructures and their application to bio-sensing. In 2014, he was Visiting Researcher in the NanoSpin Group at the Department of Applied Physics of Aalto University (Espoo, Finland), where he contributed to the design of hybrid plasmonic nanostructures with magneto-optical functionalities. In 2015 he was also Visiting Scientist at the Department of Physics at Chalmers University of Technology (Gothenburg, Sweden), where he co-devised an optical bio-sensing scheme based on polarization conversion analysis, and co-developed a new class of magneto-active meta-surfaces.

From 2017 to 2018 he was Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Italian Institute of Technology (Genoa, Italy) in the Plasmon Nanotechnologies Group, where his main activities were devoted to the design of photo-reactive nanostructures and metamaterials interfacing with biological matter for intracellular delivery of single nanoparticles and molecules, and cell membrane and nucleus investigations through surface enhanced spectroscopy techniques. He contributed also to the design and the implementation of plasmonic nanopores for single protein and genomic material sequencing, as well as for the enhancement of energy transfer mechanisms.

In 2019 he joined the newly established Ultrafast Phenomena in Condensed Matter Group led by Prof. Daniele Brida at the University of Luxembourg. The main objective of his research is to develop novel concepts in materials science, in particular to achieve a full dynamic tunability of optical, electronic and thermal effects in multi-functional nanoscale metamaterials of high technological interest by investigating their physical properties at ultrashort timescales spanning from the visible to the THz frequency range. He is also interested in exploring new avenues to enhance and actively manipulate optical nonlinearities and opto-magnetic effects in the framework of ultrafast magnetism and opto-spintronics.

His contributions to the field of magneto-plasmonics were also recognized by the Piero Brovetto Award of the Italian Physical Society. Since 2013 he have co-authored 20 articles in several peer-reviewed journals, including Physical Review Letters, Nature Communications and Nano Letters. He has also 60 contributions at international scientific conferences, workshops and academic seminars.

He serves also as Co-chair of the Early Career Advisory Board of Nano Letters and as a Research Coach of the Luxembourg Agency for Research Integrity (LARI).
