Research at the FSTM is structured into five departments:

Department of Computer Science (DCS)

The Department of Computer Science (DCS) conducts fundamental and applied research in the area of computer, communication and information sciences. The goal is to push forward the scientific frontiers of these fields.

DCS is divided into four main research areas:

  •  Intelligent and Adaptive Systems
  •  Information Security
  •  Communicative Systems
  •  Software and Systems

Department of Engineering (DoE)

The Department of Engineering (DoE) is an interdisciplinary group active in the classical domains of civil, electrical and mechanical engineering.
The main research activities are cooperative efforts of specialists in the classical engineering domains organized in four main clusters:

  •  Construction & Design
  •  Energy & Environment
  •  Automation & Mechatronics
  •  Geophysics

Department of Mathematics (DMATH)

The Department of Mathematics (DMATH) carries out research in mathematics, both on its fundamental and its applied aspects. DMATH is internationally very visible through its research publications, its high number of conference and seminar presentations, and the many conferences and workshops that it organises. DMATH disposes of a large network of international collaborations of its members, as well as collaboration agreements.

These are the main research directions:

  • Algebra and Number Theory
  • Geometry and the Mathematical Theory of Quantization
  • Geometric Topology and Analysis
  • Mathematical Modelling
  • Probability Theory and its Applications

Department of Physics and Materials Science (DPhyMS)

The Department of Physics and Materials Science (DPhyMS) is made up of 14 groups working on a wide variety of problems, including solid state physics, liquid crystals, living matter, out of equilibrium thermodynamics, the functioning of photovoltaic cells, the effects of quantum mechanics, data science and machine learning, and more. Thanks to the joint efforts of experimental and theoretical groups, revolutionary discoveries are published in journals of international reputation, and the university benefits from multiple prestigious grants from the EU, CER and FNR with total external funding of more than 6 million 'euros per year. Scientists and students around the world create a unique, friendly and open-minded community for research, which allows us to work in a varied department, both scientifically and culturally. A vast network of international collaborations gives access to a multitude of possibilities for the advancement of scientific careers.

Department of Life Sciences and Medicine (DLSM)

Combining molecular, cellular and computational approaches, research at the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine (DLSM) focuses on the fundamental understanding of biological processes relevant to human diseases to make use of it for biomedical applications.
Main research areas are:

  •  Cancer Cell Biology and Drug Discovery
  •  Molecular Disease Mechanisms
  •  Neuro Inflammation
  •  Calcium Signalling and inflammation
  •  Systems Biology


Strategic Research Priority: Computational Sciences
