About the Project
This activity will design a new forward link air interface for broadband satellite systems, with the focus being the maximization of the capacity of next generation broadband networks, while removing any constraints related to compatibility with legacy broadcast systems. The target is to significantly improve the key performance indicators of broadband systems like capacity, latency and latency jitter. However, other factors like user terminal and gateway complexity and ease of integrations with terrestrial networks will be considered as well.
It is expected that the main gains in terms of capacity can be achieved by optimizing the new air interface design to more efficiently support interference mitigation techniques as well as to improve the energy efficiency at high spectral efficiency values (the distance from the Shannon Bound increases with the spectral efficiency).
Concepts being used within terrestrial LTE networks or being considered within the 5G standardization effort [6] are certainly worth to be considered as possible candidate techniques.
