About the Project
Towards the future integrated satellite-5G ecosystem, the project exploits the potential synergy of applying 5G emerging non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) solutions to satellite networks. The goal of the project is to boost the performance of multi-beam satellite and hybrid satellite-5G systems by applying new types of radio access solutions, developing advanced signal processing techniques, and optimizing resource allocation.
The project targets several issues of a) how to satisfy unprecedented performance requirements by using limited radio resources in future satellite-5G systems, b) how to keep seamless integration between the satellite component and the currently evolved 5G terrestrial system, c) how to obtain substantial synergies of integrating NOMA to satellite-5G scenarios. To address these issues and challenges, the proposed project takes a holistic view in resource optimization and signal processing.
ROSETTA includes the following scientific and technological tasks:
- Review the new radio access solutions in 5G terrestrial systems, and analyze their applicability for the multi-beam satellite systems and satellite-5G networks;
- Identify the satellite-5G scenarios where the performance improvement by using NOMA can be expected;
- Identify practical constraints, architectures, and system requirements for the satellite-5G scenarios;
- Develop mathematical models to suitably describe the considered resource optimization problems in NOMA based satellite-5G networks;
- Assess the achievable performance region by considering a heterogeneous set of performance metrics, and design tailored algorithms to enable high-quality solutions for performance improvement;
- Carry out performance assessment, and investigate the trade-offs among various performance metrics with system complexity and computational efficiency.
