The project aims at enhancing the Ka band satellite systems throughput in order to meet the envisaged increase in the traffic demand. Towards this, high spectrum reuse is required which can be achieved by employing the idea of cognitive radio in satellite communications in order to improve the spectral resources exploitation while adhering to the incumbent interference constraints. Efficient techniques have been developed to enable cognitive downlink satellite communications in Ka band. However, cognitive uplink communication which renders to be the most challenging one, and of high importance to the satellite industry is still in its infancy. Therefore, the objective of the project is to develop dynamic resource allocation techniques for underlay cognitive uplink satellite terminals coexisting with the incumbent terrestrial networks and assuming limited and realistic channel state information at the cognitive users. Moreover, the resource allocation algorithms will be adapted to the nonlinear impairments resulting from high power amplifier on-board the satellite. The developed techniques in this project, shall end to 400% increase in terms of satellite uplink throughput in Ka band, which in turn enables the satellite operators to provide higher rate services to the users, and further look into the new areas of high throughput applications and services.
The main outcome of the project is a MATLAB-based SW simulator which merges all the technical results into a global system evaluation and simulator of different scenarios according to different levels of cooperation between the satellite system(s).
