Gemma is a PhD student in Economics at the University of Luxembourg. She conducted a research stay at the DIW Berlin in October 2022 and in March 2023. She holds a Master in Specialized Economic Analysis (International trade, finance and development) from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (BGSE). Before coming to Luxembourg, she worked as a research assistant at IESE Business School in Barcelona.

She is an applied microeconomist with an interest in Health Economics, Wellbeing, Political Economy and Conflict. Her current research focuses on the determinants of individual resilience. Part of her work consists in looking at the consequences of adversity, both in the long- and short-term. This allows her to empirically test existing models from the resilience literature. Her Job Market Paper looks at the long-term effect of war intensity on resilience, using WWII destruction data of German cities. Another chapter of her PhD thesis investigates the impact of economic and health shocks during the Covid-19 pandemic. Lastly, she has explored the role of an ‘inherited’ component as opposed to a ‘contextual’ component together with the inter-generational transmission of cultural resilience, using a sample of European immigrants.
