I am an Assistant Professor in Applied Linguistics and Language Teaching at the University of Luxembourg, working at the Institute for Research on Romance Studies. I am a linguist by training, but I am involved in transdisciplinary research on second language acquisition, foreign language learning, linguistics and sociolinguistics. Within this transdisciplinary framework, I investigate questions related to work, learning, language and education. I look at epistemological and methodological issues such as: What are the conditions for inter/transdisciplinary dialogue? How do we work across values and methods to produce research with a societal impact?

  • Multilingualism and migration: What does it mean to teach, learn, work or live in conditions of heightened diversity and mobility? What are the conditions for fairer and more dynamic interactions in higher education, at primary school or in vocational education?
  • Work: What are the changing discourses in/around/about work and training? What are the new meanings of work in the current context of technological development? What links can be identified between language, vocational education and (un)employment?

Research interests:

Academic writing/Intercultural communication and e-learning: Following the Erasmus+ project I coordinated an inter-university French and German Moodle course online. I intend to develop further cross-linguistic and intercultural analysis in an academic context in order to contribute research-based material to our multilingual online platform.

Academic writing and peer work: Peer proofreading at doctoral level offers a non-hierarchical, less pressured forum for dialogue and discussion about the meaning of aspects of the text. Exploring consistency in academic writing across various disciplines (history, literature, didactics, biology, medicine, economics, law, etc.) is a central part of this process. Peer proofreading is a driver for acquiring new syntactic knowledge and argumentative strategies. The energy, shared reflection and support generated among peers develops self-confidence and improves written skills.

Plurilingual language acquisition: Together with my colleagues Birgit Huemer and Katrien Deroey, respectively course coordinators for German and English, I published a book about learning academic writing skills in a multilingual knowledge environment. In one chapter of the book, we analysed corpora of academic texts in our three languages in order to identify common features that can be taught across all three languages and aspects that are really different in linguistic and intercultural terms.

Language and work: I analysed multilingual practices in professional environments in Hamburg and I am interested in developing a future research project involving the collection of data on the multilingual environment in Luxembourg. I also worked on a project about the development of a framework for the transversal skills needed in the workplace depending on one’s day-to-day situation (the RECTEC+ project). The University of Luxembourg’s contribution to the project was mainly about communication skills, including the use of written and oral skills, the integration of social norms and the application of digital resources.

Language policies: University language policies are a vital topic in multilingual teaching environments. Analysing how other multilingual universities have established language rules and how similar guidelines could be implemented here at the University of Luxembourg is also a key focus of my research.

Mentoring

The Language Centre offers a peer tutoring programme for Bachelor and Master students. Peer tutors offer free one-to-one consultations on language learning and writing for Bachelor and Master students in English, French and German. Fellow students propose guidance for written assignments with regard to structure, argumentation, referencing and style (not a full proofreading service) as peer tutors in language learning and writing.
