Security and Dependability Risks of Critical Information Infrastructures (or why Bang! is different from Crash) - February 28, 2013

It is our pleasure to host this distinguished lecture by Prof. Paulo Veríssimo, Univ. Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, LaSIGE Lisbon - Portugal. The lecture will be followed by a reception. Please feel free to forward this invitation.

Date: February 28, 2013
Time: 16:30
Venue: Weicker Building -Room B001 Ground floor, 4 rue Alphonse Weicker, L-2721 Luxembourg

Abstract: This talk is inspired by my answer to a question put few years ago to a panel, edited by the IEEE Security; Privacy journal [1]:
Sec Priv: «What’s the nature and magnitude of risk that critical information infrastructure (CII) faces over the next 15 years? By “critical,” I mean the part whose failure would have major effects on a nation, such as economic loss or loss of life».
An interesting thing is that the situation has improved since but, unfortunately, not enough, so the question and the answers to it are still current: hackers also got better and in what concerns CIIP, looks like we are always one step behind…

Paulo Veríssimo is currently a Professor of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, U. of Lisbon Faculty of Sciences (http://www.di.fc.ul.pt/~pjv), member elect of the Board of the U. of Lisbon and of the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Sciences of the U. of Lisbon, and Director of the Large-Scale Informatics Systems Laboratory, LaSIGE (http://lasige.di.fc.ul.pt). ---). He is currently Chair of the IFIP WG 10.4 on Dependable Computing and Fault-Tolerance and vice-Chair of the Steering Committee of the IEEE/IFIP DSN conference. He is Fellow of the IEEE and Fellow of the ACM. He is past Chair of the IEEE Tech. Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing (2003-04) and of the Steering Committee of the DSN conference. He belonged to the European Security & Dependability Advisory Board. He is associate editor of the Elsevier Int’l Journal on Critical Infrastructure Protection (IJCIP - 2008---). He served as PC co-chair of the IEEE/IFIP DSN-2001 conference and General Chair of DSN-2009. Veríssimo leads the Navigators research group (http://www.navigators.di.fc.ul.pt/) of LaSIGE, and is currently interested in distributed architectures, middleware and algorithms in two main facets: adaptability and safety of real-time networked embedded systems; and resilience of secure and dependable large-scale systems. He is author or co-author of over 170 peer-refereed publications in conferences and journals and co-author of 5 books.
