Every January the eyes of the tech world turn to the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Las Vegas, which introduces the next-generation of innovations to the marketplace.

This year SnT are flying the flag at CES through their partnership with Artec 3D, whose installation features the first breakthrough in SnT’s 3D body modelling project. The newly developed feature calculates body measurements from a 12-second 3D clothed scan taken in the Artec Shapify Booth. The 3D scan can then be used for virtual fitting rooms, fitness assessments, non-invasive medical check-ups, animation and beyond.

The experimental feature is the result of a year’s work by SnT scientists Cristian Porumb, Alexandre Saint, and Dr. Abd El Rahman Shabayek, under the supervision of Dr. Djamila Aouada, head of the SnT Computer Vision Lab, and in collaboration with Gleb Gusev and Kseniya Cherenkova from Artec 3D. So far, they have scanned more than 500 volunteers at the Computer Vision Lab in Belval, allowing them to develop new methods of modelling the human body in 3D. Their work has already been recognised at an international level with a Best Paper award at the prestigious IEEE International Conference on Image Processing held in September 2017 in Beijing, China.

We need you for 3D scanning

Our scientists are still busy collecting data for this research. If you would like to help them make the next step in 3D body modelling, you can volunteer to be scanned in 3D. The process takes 20 minutes, and you will go home with a 3D digital selfie, electronic access to your 3D data and a set of free sports clothing (worn during the scanning process). The scanning takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Maison du Nombre on the University’s Belval Campus. For further information, please email
