Tom Barbereau is a doctoral researcher originally from Karlsruhe (Germany). His background is in politics, economics, and philosophy (PPE) and the sociology of technologies. He received a BA in Liberal Arts & Sciences, from the University of Groningen (Netherlands), in 2018. Thereafter he went on to an internship at a company builder in Berlin, which paved way to an MSc in Science & Technology Studies at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland), which he completed in 2020.

His research focus is on decentralised ledger technologies and issues surrounding algorithmic governance and management thereof. This includes questions of corporate, IT, and information governance in the context of (primarily) enterprise blockchains. Notably, he currently works on the European Blockchain Services Infrastructure to understand how (successful) frameworks are operationalised and transition from on- to off-chain governance mechanisms.

Beyond enterprise systems, he is studying regulatory and political controversies in non-custodial and self-organising (public permissionless) systems – specifically, in the nascent field of decentralised finance/DeFi. He is passionate about decentralised autonomous organisations: specifically, how these can be attained/developed, what challenges arise throughout, and to what extent normative question are to be considered. In this context, he works on a publication on the behaviour and power of so-called whales in non-custodial DeFi projects, and what mechanisms respective communities devised to exasperate their oligopolistic power.
