Aims and Focus

The doctoral Programme in Systems and Molecular Biomedicine at the University of Luxembourg provides a high-quality research training to Ph.D. candidates and offers complementary training to Ph.D. students to complete their knowledge and skills required for their career development.

The interdisciplinary programme is tightly linked to the research programmes of the University’s Life Sciences Research Unit and the Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB). Bringing together biologists, computer scientists, mathematicians and physicists, the programme aims at federating efforts to offer early stage researchers training tailored to their specific needs. To account for respective specialisations of doctoral candidates, the doctoral school relies on two pillars:

  • Molecular Biomedicine offering doctoral education in modern biosciences with relevance to human health and disease,
  • Systems Biomedicine offering doctoral education in experimental, high throughput technologies and computational approaches to biological systems and disease processes.

The two complementary programmes bridge disciplines and give the doctoral candidates the opportunity to get insights into research areas more distantly related to their individual research training.

The programme is part of the University’s long-term strategy and, more generally, Luxembourg’s recent Health Research initiative, involving e.g. the public research centre Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH) and the Integrated Biobank of Luxembourg (IBBL).
