Master of Science in Physics

The Master in Physics is made for:

seeking extensive knowledge in physics, a cosmopolitan environment and collaboration with academics and industry professionals.

Become a scientist

Condensed matter physics is a major branch of physics. It is progressing fast in many areas at the fundamental level (e.g. new states of matter, biophysics) as well as at the technological level (e.g. energy conversion, electronics).

The members of the Department of Physics and Materials Science (DPHYMS) are well established researchers at the international level.

Cu-rich CuInSe2 solar cells with a Cu-poor surface
Aida, Yasuhiro; Depredurand, Valérie; Larsen, Jes K.; Arai, Hitoshi; Tanaka, Daisuke; Masato, Kurihara; Siebentritt, Susanne

Crystallization of polyethylene: A molecular dynamics simulation study of the nucleation and growth mechanisms
Anwar, Muhammad; Schilling, Tanja
in Polymer (2015), 76

Topological states in multi-orbital HgTe honeycomb lattices
Beugeling, Wouter; Kalesaki, Efterpi; Delerue, Christophe; Niquet, Yann-Michel; Vanmaekelbergh, Daniel; Morais Smith, Cristiane
in Nature Communications (2015), 6(6316)

This Masters programme will give you the opportunity to take part in cutting-edge research. The bonds created with the PHYMS offer an excellent preparation for any future PhD.

Become an engineer

Physicists with a solid background in condensed matter physics work successfully in all branches of industry, from electronics to automotive, aerospace, biomedical, plastics or steel industries.

Those interested in building mathematical models of reality and making predictions are well sought after in banks and finance, insurance or consulting companies.

Become a teacher

This Master’s programme, together with the physics-track of the Bachelors in Sciences and Engineering, provides excellent basic training for future physics teachers in Luxembourgish secondary schools.

Elective subjects include didactics and pedagogy/education. These courses help you prepare for the entrance exam to the ‘stage pédagogique’, when you are a future graduate or after your graduation.
