Learning for Sustainability
Relevant Study Programmes
All three faculties offer study programmes across a wide range of disciplines that equip students in different ways to address diverse sustainability challenges. The table below lists those study programmes that explicitly dedicate a substantial share of the courses to sustainability challenges.
Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) |
Certificate in Sustainable Development and Social Innovation Language: English A transdisciplinary cross-faculty programme with contributions from faculty in the FDEF, FSTM and FHSE that includes a course on social enterprise and social innovation with some lectures on sustainable-, impact- and micro-finance, and one course on transforming science and social practice for sustainability. The programme’s goal is to equip change agents to engage with complexity, contingency (situated knowledge), contradictions, uncertainty and ignorance. The Certificate aims to provide a better understanding of the challenges that societies, organisations and individuals face as we approach the limits of the biophysical carrying capacity of our planet. Sustainability and Social Innovation are inseparable: Active involvement of both citizens and science is necessary for guiding and monitoring the innovations that promise to protect or improve our lifestyle standards. The study program offers tools for social learning to tap into the collective intelligence of stakeholders and experts. Issues such as energy, water and food production, waste and recycling, sustainable housing and transport are covered. The courses provide an overview on the most recent insights from academics and practitioners relating to global change and to transformational learning for sustainability. The Institute for Geography and Spatial Planning runs four teaching programmes relating to sustainability: |
Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) |
Master of Science in Civil Engineering - Megastructure Engineering with Sustainable Resources Langues d'enseignement: Français/English The Master of Science in Civil Engineering educates, not only the general Civil Engineer, but also has a focus on planning and construction of megastructures with the sustainable use of resources. The theme "sustainability" is increasingly important and the well-trained modern civil engineer must be able to judge and optimise civil structures and buildings in the context of the growing shortness of construction materials and energy resources. It is this focus on both themes, megastructures and sustainability, which sets us apart from other masters of civil engineering. Master of Science in Engineering - Sustainable Product Creation Langues d'enseignement: Français/English The Master of Science in Engineering – Sustainable Product Creation provides engineering students with a comprehensive understanding of all relevant aspects of the product creation process. The courses cover market segment definition, product designing and calculation, product manufacturing and product recycling and re-use. The classes include all aspects of sustainable product creation and have an interdisciplinary scope with mechanical and electrical know how. Master Professionnel en Sciences de l’Ingénieur - Efficacité Énergétique et Économique Langues d'enseignement: Français/English The energy efficiency bias of this study program makes it ideal for bachelor’s graduates in engineering wishing to acquire deeper knowledge in the thermodynamics, mathematics and modern technologies needed to assess energy-related issues. The course combines technical elements with units from economical sciences and business administration with the aim of providing the full range of skills required for technical and commercial approach energy-related problems. A general advanced physics education, including a mandatory course on semiconductors and solar cell, as well as a specialisation of photovoltaics. We also offer lectures on understanding the limitations of energy consumption and renewable production. |
Faculty of Law, Economics and Finance (FDEF) |
Most BA and MA programmes relating to economics and management offer introductory lectures to sustainable development and the economy, and optional courses on ecological economics. There are plans to start transforming existing teaching programmes at the Bachelors and Masters level to increase students’ sustainability awareness and to foster students’ knowledge, skills and competences in relation to sustainability. The longer-term plan is to weave sustainable finance into all course units to problematize sustainability in all subject areas (finance, economics, law, accounting, auditing, and entrepreneurship). |
