This presentation will have a look at the unspeakable discomfort that is still discernible when talking of children or youth books treating LGBTIQ+ topics. Some might remember the parliamentary question a certain Luxembourgish MP wrote, feeling deeply threatened by a play starring a gay kangaroo (Ein Känguru wie du, Ulrich Hub, Calsen 2016), which he believed to be of compromising influence to youngsters.

However, after the roaring success of books like I am Jazz (Jazz Jennings, Jessica Herthel and Shelagh McNicholas, Penguin Random House 2014), and the evidence of a growing corpus of books portraying non-heteronormative family structures and gender diversity, we observe a shift in the mainstream sentiment surrounding these topics. And yet, many parents deem these matters too daring for children and young people. What are these books really taking about, and how can we as literary scholars convey the message that they speak to all of us?

Sandy Artuso is a doctoral researcher at the Institut für Deutsche Sprache, Literatur und für Interkulturalität at the University of Luxembourg. She is writing her AFR-funded PhD-thesis on German autobiographies written by trans people (supervisor: Prof. Dr. Georg Mein).
